5Best sleep outdoors!Aug 08, 2010
I bought the Thermarest Trail Lite for my wife and I to do some backpacking on Cumberland Island, GA. I was a boy scout when I was younger and would just use a sleeping bag or maybe lay an extra blanket down for padding while camping. This served me well for years until I reached 30 and the nights got a lot longer. I can tell you, after using the trail lite for one weekend, it was worth every penny. I am a pretty big guy at 6 foot 250lbs and I couldn't feel the ground. If you are a side sleeper, you may need to use one of the old military pads under your thermarest depending on how much you weigh. I could feel the ground a little, but was not uncomfortable. My wife is 5'5" and 135lbs and she couldn't feel the ground at all. We used a sheet in lieu of sleeping bags and had no problem with the pads moving or sliding. I don't know if there are any better pads on the market, but I am thrilled with my Thermarest Trail Lite and plan on using it for a long time to come.

5Comfortable, quick and lightAug 02, 2010
I purchased 2 of these for my husband and me to take camping and to music festivals. We have used a typical air mattress in the past, but it is so heavy and by the first night it's usually really saggy and needs air replaced throughout a weekend. I knew I wanted a Therm-a-rest mat for some time, and when we got our wedding money we decided to go for it.

When they arrived, we inflated them (you do need to blow them up if you want them really firm, but it is very easy and quick) and tested them out on the living room floor. I couldn't believe how comfortable an inch thick mat could be! A far cry from the foam mats at the discount stores. I placed a "D" battery under mine and could not feel it while laying on the mat.

We took them to the All Good festival and had some of the best sleep I've had camping. I did not feel the rocky, hilly terrain under my mat all weekend. They are cushy but without too much give. You can adjust the softness somewhat, using a little more or less air. Just this past weekend, we used them again at a Md. State Park, and on the gravel of our camping spot it did great as well.

My husband is over 250-some pounds, over 6 feet and his shoulders fit on the mat, and he can stretch out and not hang off the bottom. We got the large ones and they are a little longer than our sleeping bags, which is great, they fill up the tent well, don't sag or shift in the night and provide the right blend of support and softness. We have cotton sleeping bags so they do not slip or slide on the mats.

They are easy to pack away, just roll them up, squishing the air out, and then close the valve and they stay nice and small. We carry them with our yoga mat straps, no stuff sacks. Since we're only using them in a tent, and not right on the ground, I'm not worried about puncture or anything. The material is very strong though, I'm pretty sure they'd hold up on some unforgiving surfaces.

All in all, if you are looking for your first Therm-a-Rest, I would recommend this one in a heartbeat. The price is good for someone who is not an avid backpacker but appreciates comfort and quality for car camping and festivals. I'm really happy with them, and look forward to years of use!

4Great product and doubles as chair against logAug 01, 2010
Used this for 3 days and my back was just fine (typically have a bad back). Product works and appears durable. Used nightly as chair around camp fire and for sleeping. I try not to comment on pricing but avoid REI you'll faint when you see their pricing on this item.

5ComfyJun 21, 2010
I've been using Therm-a-rests for many years.

This one (Large size) I use for car camping or an overnight hike. It would be fine for overnight hiking - still less bulky than a blue foam pad, and a similar weight. It's a little large to strap onto a backpack for a full-blown backpacking trip though - at least for my taste.

It's considerably longer, wider, and thicker than my other therm-a-rest; which makes for great comfort. My smaller one is much lighter weight and packs in half the space, but it leaves my legs dangling off the end. This one has plenty of space all the way around.

I haven't noticed an issue with slipping off of these, but that could be because I always try to find a level place to pitch the tent. In any case, I don't roll around much in my sleep.

5Makes camp sleeping much easierApr 27, 2010
This self-inflating ground pad is what everyone needs to bring on a backpacking trip. I bought the Therm-a-rest trail light large, and let me tell you, It was the nicest feeling pad on my tired back after a days hike. I love it. I would recommend getting the weather resistant Therm-a-rest pouch with this as it does not come with one. It is worth every penny. Your back and body will thank you. Happy trails!
